WHY JIUZHAIGOU
A Valley That Looks Improbable
Jiuzhaigou means “valley of nine villages”, after the Tibetan villages that still sit along its length. The park covers around 72,000 hectares of forested mountains, and its lakes are the reason people travel across the country to see it.
The color comes from geology. Water running through limestone picks up calcium carbonate, which forms natural travertine dams and settles as a pale mineral floor. Sunlight passing through the shallow water returns in shades of turquoise, jade and deep blue, and because the water is mineral-rich and cold, fallen tree trunks lie intact on the lake beds, visible through the surface decades after they fell.
The valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a World Biosphere Reserve, and it is one of the last strongholds of the giant panda, alongside golden monkeys, takin and more than 140 species of birds. The park is organized into three valleys that meet in a Y shape, with shuttle buses connecting the main viewpoints and boardwalks running between them.
Altitude is moderate — the inhabited valley floor sits between roughly 2,000 and 3,100 meters, with the highest viewpoints a little above that — so most travelers can walk it comfortably if they take the first day slowly. It is not a hiking destination in the technical sense. It is a place to stand still and look.
WHAT TO SEE
Highlights of Jiuzhaigou
The park rewards two full days. Rushing it into one means spending most of the day on a bus.
Five Flower Lake
The most photographed lake in the valley, and shallow enough to see straight to the bottom. Submerged logs lie across the lake floor in pale lines under water that shifts from blue to green to amber depending on the light. Come early in the day when the surface is calm and the reflection is clean.
Long Lake
The largest and deepest lake in the park, at the top of the Zechawa valley and the highest point most visitors reach. There is no outlet visible and the water level stays constant year-round. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, it is the coldest and quietest of the major viewpoints.
Nuorilang Waterfall
Around 320 meters wide, one of the widest waterfalls in China, dropping in a curtain of separate streams across a travertine terrace. Boardwalks on both sides put you close enough to feel the spray. In autumn the surrounding forest turns yellow and red behind the water.
Pearl Shoal & Mirror Cliff
A broad, shallow cascade that slides down a stepped limestone shelf, scattering into droplets that look like falling pearls. The boardwalk descends alongside it to the base, and the cliff opposite reflects into the water on still mornings.
Shuzheng Lakes & Panda Lake
The Shuzheng valley holds a chain of terraced lakes linked by small weirs, each a slightly different shade. Further up, Panda Lake and its waterfall are named for the pandas once seen drinking there, and are among the easiest major sights to reach from the park entrance.
Huanglong
A separate scenic area about two hours away, at higher altitude, where a valley floor of hundreds of travertine pools steps down the mountainside in bands of gold, green and turquoise. Often combined with Jiuzhaigou in the same trip, either as a day trip or on the way to or from the airport.
SAMPLE ITINERARY
Three Days in Jiuzhaigou
Most travelers arrive from Chengdu. Two full days is a comfortable pace for the park; the third day works well at Huanglong or for traveling onward.
Arrival and the upper valley
Arrive the evening before where possible, sleep low and start early. Buses run to the top of the valley each morning.
- Rize valley: Five Flower Lake, Pearl Shoal and Panda Lake
- Boardwalk sections between viewpoints rather than the shuttle for wider views
- Early night — altitude is moderate but a slow first day helps
Zechawa and Shuzheng valleys
A second full day lets you reach Long Lake and take the lower valley at walking pace.
- Long Lake early, then the Five Color Pool above it
- Nuorilang Waterfall and the Shuzheng Lakes on the way back down
- Optional evening in one of the Tibetan villages near the park entrance
Huanglong or onward
Choose a higher-altitude second scenic area, or return to Chengdu for pandas and city time.
- Option A: Huanglong travertine pools by cable car and boardwalk
- Option B: return to Chengdu — panda base, Jinli Street and Sichuan hotpot
- Onward connections by air or the Chengdu–Huanglong rail line

Before You Go
Tickets are capped and dated
Entry is limited each day and tickets are sold online against your passport, in peak season well in advance. Tell us your dates early so tickets and park buses can be arranged in the right order.
Altitude is manageable, but respect it
The valley floor is around 2,000–3,100 meters and Huanglong is higher still. Take the first day slowly, drink water, and avoid scheduling a long flight or a heavy hike immediately after arrival. Travelers with heart or respiratory conditions should ask their doctor first.
Autumn is spectacular and busy
The color peaks in mid to late October, which is also the busiest period, with higher hotel prices and full park buses. Late spring and early summer are quieter and greener, and winter brings snow and some closed sections.
Weather changes quickly
Mountain weather shifts within a day: sun, cloud, rain and cold evenings. Bring layers, a waterproof shell and shoes with grip for the boardwalks, and charge your camera batteries — there is a lot to photograph.
Combine Jiuzhaigou with
Most travelers reach Jiuzhaigou through Chengdu, which makes the pairing natural: pandas and city food first, mountains and lakes second.
